I know teaching children to read is not easy .How do kids actually learn to read?If you are searching for the answer of this question then you are on right place. In this article you will find some easy steps to teach English reading to beginners. If you follow these steps you can easily develop reading skills in your child.
Introduction
Reading is one of the best ways for children to tackle their emotions, learn about new cultures, open up new ideas and develop a love of reading. The more time you can spend with your child reading together, the better! The following tips will help you get started along your journey as a parent of a toddler or preschooler who loves books.
According to psychology professor Daniel T Willingham:
The three key elements of reading are decoding, comprehension and appreciation. The teachers and parents both needs to do practical orientation of 3 elements mentioned above from birth to adolescence.
Here I have mentioned some easy steps to teach reading skills to your kids :
1.Teach phonics
If you want your child to be a good and fluent reader then you have to start from phonics. It may be simple phonics or jolly phonics. I would recommend jolly phonics .when your child will be able to pronounce the alphabets correctly then he or she will be able to guess the beginning or ending sounds in a word.you can use nursery rhymes to clear the concept of phonics.
2.Start from Lowercase
I always prefer lowercase the reason is that lowercase is what is mostly seen in reading the uppercase letters kids learn automatically as you teach them writing or letter names .
3.. 2 Letter blends
So the next step is letter blends of just 2 letters. We are going to be combining consonants and vowels. You have to prepare the charts or a folder of different consonants and vowels blends. Try to make them as given below so that your child can have better understanding with the sounds and it makes the blending process easier and your child will be able to reading:
ba
be
bi
bo
bu
4....3 letter blends
Now the next step is 3 letter blends. The blends of words that actually have meaning.you have to prepare a chart having vowels in the middle and consonants in the beginning and at the end like given below
bat, hat, rat, mat
ben, ten, hen, den
dig, big, wig, zig,
dog, log,hop, pop, mop
bug, rug, dug, mug
5.Reading of complete simple sentence
After doing alot of practice on a 1 word reading of 3 letter the next step is to make your kids to be able of reading a simple sentence like:
Fox is big.
Rat got wet.
Dog did sit.
Bug is hot.
The hen is red .
The rat ran.
And so on.......
6.Read books every day.
Reading is a good way to relax and improve your child's vocabulary, reading comprehension, reading fluency and speed.
Reading can be done in the form of picture books or fiction stories. Picture books are easier for children to understand than the more complex text in longer novels.
7.Let them choose the book.
This is one of those things that sounds so simple, but it's actually not an easy choice for a mom to make. You want your son or daughter to have some kind of connection with the book, but you don't want them to have too much input into what they read—you still want them to learn from reading. What do you do? Well, take your kids to the library or books shop and let them choose books of their own choice .
8.Read aloud to them.
Reading aloud to your child can be a great way to spend quality time together. Reading aloud helps children learn how to read on their own and also teaches them about different topics, such as history or science.
Reading aloud is important for many reasons:
• It makes reading fun! It's not just about looking at the words on the page, but hearing them as well.* Reading aloud helps build vocabulary and comprehension skills.* It encourages creativity by letting kids imagine what they're seeing or hearing.* It gives you an opportunity to connect with your child through shared interests or experiences that come up while reading together (like sports).
9.Show your child that reading is important to you.
Reading to your child is one of the best ways to show them that reading is important to you. You can read to them before bed, when you have time, in the car and at the library or bookstore.
Reading aloud will help your child develop a love for literature and will encourage them to become lifelong readers!
10.Ask questions about what you read together.
• Ask open-ended questions.
• Ask questions that require more than a yes or no answer.
• Ask questions that require your child to think.
• Ask questions that encourage your child to use their imagination, such as asking them what they think will happen next in the story or how characters might feel after reading it.*
11.Find fun activities for kids about the topics in the books you read together.
You can find fun activities for kids about the topics in the books you read together.
• Go to the zoo.
• Go to the library and find a book about the topic. Read it together!
• Watch a movie about the topic (or listen to one on your computer). If you're feeling ambitious, make popcorn at home and bring it to watch your movie together!
12. Play games
When your child is able to do reading install games in your cell phone to enhance the vocabulary. It will help them to get more powerful fluent reader . Here I have mentioned some of the best games :
Wordscapes,word find and fugo
13.Be positive about books, reading and writing, even if your child doesn't share your enjoyment of it all the time.
Reading is a great way to spend time with your children, and it's also important for their education. It can be hard to get excited about reading every day when your kids don't share your enthusiasm for it. But if you keep trying, there are plenty of reasons why reading should become a priority in your family:
• It develops vocabulary skills and comprehension skills that will help them learn math later on in life (which means they'll have an easier time understanding things like science textbooks).
• It builds confidence by allowing kids who struggle with verbalizing what they want or need to express themselves through words on paper instead of just saying them out loud without any thought behind it at all!
It's not always easy being positive about something so boring-sounding as reading—but remember that this isn't just about getting through each day without fighting over TV shows again tonight (although we totally will). If anything, these tips might make sure those arguments stay far away from our doorsteps forevermore...
Reading is important for your childrens' education and overall development.
Reading is an important skill that can be developed by your children. Reading helps them learn about the world and other cultures, as well as themselves. It also helps develop their vocabulary and language skills, which are essential when learning other subjects like math or history.
Reading is fun! So please don't worry if your child isn't reading fluently yet; there are many ways to encourage reading at home, including:
• Reading aloud to them (this will help with language development)
• Encouraging them to pick up a book on their own sometimes instead of having you read it all out loud first (that way they get more time practicing their ability)
Conclusion
Reading is an important part of your child's education and overall development. It can be difficult to find the time to read with your kids, but we hope that these tips will help you get started on a fun reading adventure together!
